Producers Need to Prepare for Bluetongue Now!!

Wyoming experienced an outbreak of the disease "Bluetongue" late last summer/early fall which hit some Wyoming flocks hard.  Since that time, the WWGA has been working with the Wyoming State Vet & Wyoming Livestock Board office to prepare for any possible outbreak this year.  In addition to the WLSB and the State Vet, the USDA’s Arthropod Borne Animal Disease Research Laboratory (ABADRL) in Laramie has taken an active and tremendous role over the course of the past year in examining this past BT outbreak, and in looking at various factors related to infection and prevention.  Also, the WWGA has been working with Dr. Jack Lloyd, a retired professor (emeritus) of Veterinary Entomology within the University of Wyoming’s Department of Renewable Resources, Dr. Bob Stobart in UW’s Animal Science Department, several of the ABADRL researchers including Dr. Will Reeves, and the Wyoming State Vet to look at insecticides not currently cleared for use in sheep as potential new products to use in the prevention and control of the problem midge.
